Having seen Jesus Christ Superstar it has got me thinking a lot about musicals again and I feel I want to start compiling a top musicals list. And actually just right now I am wanting to start a top songs list too as while writing this post, I have been listening to a musicals playlist and One Night in Bangkok has just come on, which for some reason I really love!
Anyway, for now, Musicals:
The one that leaps to mind at the moment is Starlight Express. You can read about my starlight experience over at the general musicals page. Should mention that my best musicals list is going to be very influenced about the production I saw and when I saw it. Am sure that several would not withstand a second (or 3rd or 4th!) viewing in a different frame of mind. I think from age 8 to maybe 17 I would have confidently said that Joseph and Grease were my favourite musicals. I saw both when I was 8 and listened to the cds till I knew them backwards and had performed several dance routines to them! So they are both going to be on my list. But maybe somewhere in my top 10 area. I tend to do that with lists, I give them a general position on lists (top 5, top 10, top 20) without actually working out how many things I would have in my top 5! Nows the chance to find out for musicals at least!
16/1/11 Writing my post for The King and I I decided that it should try to be added to my top 5 list. Very much enjoyed and the film sometimes makes it on to my top 5 film list! Also yesterday I was talking to some of John's friends about my musical likes and I mentioned Les Mis and Me and My Girl as being favourites so I would like to add them to the top 5 spots. And I also mentioned Hairspray so should that be added for the time being. So that takes me to 5 at the moment. Wonder how it will be rearranged in time.
5/5/12 Just added Anything Goes to my Top 10!
28/6/14
Having seen Wicked last weekend, we were ranking where we thought that belonged and I said top 10 for me which then resulted in my having to list my top 10. So in no particular order I mentioned the ones above and some others. Let's see if I can remember...
Starlight Express
King and I
Les Miserables (a choice of posts to read)
Me and My Girl
Anything Goes
Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat
Grease
Wicked
Cats
Phantom of the Opera - interestingly the only one without a post of it's own.
There's the 10! I am going to read my list and see if I can select the next best. Have also added the reasons they stand out from the rest.
Hairspray - such fun and you can't stop the beat
Ghost - amazed and surprised by story, not so much musical though
Once - lovely and intimate and moving
Billy Elliot - electricity
Fame - lively pumping
Matilda - when I grow up and theatre
Million Dollar Quartet - rock and roll and a surprise enjoyment
Return to the Forbidden Planet - rock and roll and a surprise enjoyment!
Rocky Horror Show - for the audience!
Buddy - youth memories and good music
Saturday Night Fever - seem to have fond memories and everyone being up for encore
